Mobile Mammography Coach

Bon Secours St. Francis Mobile Mammography Coach featuring 3D Tomosynthesis Imaging

Growing an Effective Program

Bon Secours St. Francis Health System to add a new mobile mammography coach (MMC) that will feature three-dimensional (3D) tomosynthesis imaging and will benefit all women in Upstate South Carolina who utilize the coach for their routine mammogram. By visiting mission-related sites and community/business sites, Bon Secours St. Francis has provideded more than 13,000 mammogram screenings since December 2012 that have resulted in 45 cancer diagnoses.

During Fiscal Year 2017 alone, the current MMC served more than 3,000 women in Anderson, Greenville, Laurens, Oconee, Pickens, and Spartanburg counties all in Upstate South Carolina (SC). The 3,000 mammograms performed resulted in 49 biopsies that led to 16 positive cancer cases being diagnosed which would have either gone unnoticed or been detected at a later stage.

Coach Features

The new MMC will feature both 2D and 3D imaging which allows for women of all breast density to utilize the convenience of mobile mammography. 3D imaging is preferred for ladies with higher breast density as dense breast tissue can often mask cancers and lead to false positives.

Other advantages of the new coach, in addition to providing the option of 2D or 3D imaging, include:

  • Commercial Freightliner chassis system that is more durable and more reliable than the current MMC, is less prone to breakdowns and service issues, and better insulates and protects the sensitive medical equipment;
  • Retractable step system so that elderly and mobility impaired patients can also use the MMC; and
  • Provides second MMC to the current fleet to allow Bon Secours St. Francis to grow its Breast Health mission by bringing more mobile screening opportunities to Upstate SC as currently 90% of the MMC’s availability is taken up by repeat business.

Aiding Early Detection

The addition of this new MMC will increase the number of patients served annually by adding a second MMC to allow for more screening opportunities for those who cannot visit the Pearlie Harris Center for Breast Health, those with more dense breasts, and those who have mobility challenges. 1 in 8 women are diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime and this coach will aid in the early detection of those cancers.

Furthering Our Mission

As Bon Secours St. Francis Health System’s mission states – to bring compassion to health care and to be Good Help to Those in Need, especially those who are poor and dying – it’s services and equipment such as a new mobile mammography coach that allow the health system to live the mission statement. The MMC will allow the caregivers and clinicians of Bon Secours St. Francis to deliver the vital mammography imaging to all of God’s children regardless of ability to pay whether the individual is insured, underinsured, or uninsured.

The new mobile mammography coach is expected to cost $1,250,000 and is broken down as follows:

  • $500,000 for the MMC
  • $500,000 for 3D Tomosynthesis
  • $250,000 for IT and operational costs
